OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) —It’s the first day for the new Oakland police chief. Only two news photographers were allowed in and the media was not able to ask questions.

Back in March, when his hiring was first announced, he said in his first hundred days in office he plans to meet with key community stake holders city staff and the police department.

Mitchell comes to Oakland at a time when the city finds itself with many concerns over public safety.

Recent data from the city shows overall crime is falling in Oakland through the start of this year. But one type of crime – robberies – is shown to be worsening.

“Really what I’m doing right now is … it got presented with the daily crime report… I’m going over that, preparing myself for the meeting that we are going to have in a little bit to go over the crime report for the past week,” said Chief Floyd Mitchell.

“I’m jotting down some questions that I have so I’m up to speed … how they report their crime… what’s the time frame that they are reporting and really what’s the lag time because that’s what’s really important because sometimes it will say one thing, but I want to go what the lag time and go from there.”

Mitchell walked out of his office with his suit on.
