Huntington Beach, Santa Margarita trade places, May 15 – Orange County Register

This week’s Orange County high school baseball rankings.

Notable this week: Huntington Beach’s 3-2 win over Santa Margarita in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs moves the Oilers to No. 2 in the rankings, a position held by Santa Margarita last week. … Fountain Valley rises into the Top 10. The Barons finished second in the Surf League, behind Huntington Beach, and finished ahead of Los Alamitos, a Division 3 semifinalist. … Beckman rises to No. 18 after advancing to the Division 3 final.

ORANGE COUNTY BASEBALL TOP 25

1. Orange Lutheran 25-6: The Lancers lost to Harvard-Westlake 4-2 in the Division 1 semifinals. They were the Trinity League champions and won the championship of the Prep Baseball California tournament and lost to Division 1 finalist Corona in the National High School Invitational championship game.

2. Huntington Beach 23-9: The Oilers beat Santa Margarita 3-2 in the Division 1 quarterfinals on Trevor Goldenetz’s walk-off hit in the bottom of the eighth inning. Huntington Beach, champion of the Surf League, lost to Corona 3-1 in the semifinals.

3. Santa Margarita 22-9-1: The Eagles, who finished second to Orange Lutheran in the Trinity League, lost in extra innings to Huntington Beach 3-2 in the Division 1 quarterfinals after playoff wins over Tesoro 7-0 and Gahr 6-3.

4. JSerra 15-13-1: After finishing third in the Trinity League the Lions lost to Bonita 15-2 in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.

5. Cypress 20-10-1: The Empire League champion Centurions beat Calabasas 5-2 in the first round and lost to San Dimas 7-6 in the second round of the Division 1 playoffs.

6. Mater Dei 17-13: The Monarchs lost in extra innings to eventual finalist Corona 3-1 in the Division 1 playoffs second round. They won the Boras Classic South championship with a win over Corona, then finished sixth in the six-team Trinity League.

7. Servite 15-13: The Friars finished fifth in the Trinity League but did not get a spot in the playoffs because the Division 2 bracket did not have room for them as an at-large team.

8. Foothill 21-9: The Knights, who were Crestview League co-champions with El Modena and Villa Park, beat South Hills 7-5 in the Division 1 first round before losing to La Mirada 5-2 in the second round.

9. Pacifica 18-4: The Mariners lost to Aquinas 7-2 in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs. Pacifica finished second to Cypress in the Empire League.

10. Fountain Valley 21-9: The Barons finished second to Huntington Beach in the Surf League, ahead of Division 3 semifinalist Los Alamitos, and beat Trabuco Hills 4-3 in the Division 3 playoffs before losing to El Segundo 2-1 in the second round.
