Out on Film has chosen the filmmakers who will benefit from its first annual filmmaker fund.

According to an email blast, Atlanta’s LGBTQ+ film festival has chosen six creators to receive grants to help complete their projects. The money, $5,000 in total, comes from an Out on Film 2023 Kickstarter campaign.

“Out On Film is extremely happy to be able to award our first Filmmaker Funds, made possible through our 2023 Kickstarter campaign,” said Justice Obiaya, Out On Film’s executive director, in an emailed statement. “In our inaugural year we were able to fund six exciting projects … Our goal is to grow the fund to provide even more grants in the future.

According to Festival Director Jim Farmer, the jurors who selected the recipients awarded $2,000 to one filmmaker, $1,000 to another, and $500 to the remaining four filmmakers. The filmmaker who received $2,000 is New York City-based filmmaker Hannah Myers for her film “DADDY.”

“Both our Filmmaker Fund and our annual Screenplay Competition further our mission to spotlight queer stories and to find the voices of tomorrow,” Farmer said in an emailed statement. “I am excited to be able to help these directors finish their films and excited to see where their works land.”

The grant recipients are from all over the country. Atlanta-based filmmaker Millie Rose Evans received a grant to work on her film “9 Lives.”

In addition to Evans and Myers, the filmmakers who won grants include: Jonathan Andre Culliton for “WILLA JUSTICE: Drag Queen Private Eye,” Michael Donte for “What Channel is Love?,” Lane Stanley for “T,” and Rashaad Newsome for “Assembly.”

Out on Film plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign to help with its 2025 Filmmaker Fund on May 17 to go through June 16.
